Frequently Asked Questions — Gardan

What is the Gardan GY-80 Horizon?

The GY-80 Horizon is a French four-seat touring monoplane designed by Yves Gardan in the 1950s and built by Sud Aviation/SOCATA from 1960 to 1974 (273 built). It was designed to compete with the Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee, and Beech Musketeer — and succeeded in both performance and price. All-metal construction with retractable tricycle gear and an all-moving tailplane give it a modern feel despite its vintage origins.

Is the Gardan Horizon practical to own today?

The Horizon is described as a fantastic little aircraft with good performance — 150-180 HP Lycoming engines are well-supported globally. The retractable gear provides better cruise speeds than fixed-gear competitors. Most of the 273 built were sold to French owners, with some exported to Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. Parts availability requires working through the French aviation community and SOCATA/Daher. The type is rare outside Europe.
