About Ercoupe Aircraft Company

The Ercoupe is a beloved classic — a low-wing, twin-tail two-seater designed in the 1940s to be exceptionally easy and safe to fly, famous for its (original) two-control, no-rudder-pedal design and spin-resistant characteristics. Built over the decades by ERCO, Forney, Alon and Mooney (the **415-C/CD**, **Aircoupe** and **Alon A-2**), it has a devoted following for affordable, fun, forgiving flying with a sliding canopy and great visibility. There are currently 7 Ercoupe aircraft for sale.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ercoupe

Is the Ercoupe really impossible to spin?

The FAA's predecessor (CAA) certified the Ercoupe as characteristically incapable of spinning — the limited elevator travel and interconnected ailerons/rudder prevent the nose from pitching high enough to enter a spin. This makes it one of the safest designs for low-time pilots. Some later models restored independent rudder pedals, which changes the spin characteristics. Original two-control Ercoupes qualify for Sport Pilot privileges.

What should Ercoupe buyers watch for?

Corrosion is the number one concern — the all-metal airframe is 75+ years old and must be thoroughly inspected per Ercoupe Owners Club guidelines. Useful load is limited to about 433 lbs at LSA weight (1,320 lbs), restricting two heavier adults. The 75 HP models climb at only 500 fpm max, dropping to 300–400 fpm at gross weight in summer. Check for proper AD compliance and join the Ercoupe Owners Club before buying.

How much does it cost to own an Ercoupe?

Ercoupes are among the cheapest airplanes to own: insurance runs about $600/year, annuals average $800, and the small Continental engine sips fuel at 5–6 GPH. Flyable examples sell for $15,000–25,000, with restored showpieces reaching $75,000. Maintenance costs average $1,000–3,000/year. Cruise is 100–105 mph. For a vintage airplane with unique character, spin resistance, and rock-bottom operating costs, the Ercoupe is hard to beat.
