About the Piper Aztec

The Piper Aztec (PA-23-250) is a rugged 250 hp piston twin — a six-seat workhorse used for charter, cargo, training and personal flying since 1959. Two Lycoming O-540 or IO-540 engines push it to ~190 knots, and the Turbo Aztec adds turbocharging for higher-altitude performance. Production through 1981 yielded variants A through F plus turbo and Nomad versions.

Key price factors: engine time to overhaul, year and airframe hours, avionics, damage history and logbook completeness — see the buying guide below for the full pre-purchase checklist.

Buying a Used Piper Aztec

When buying a Piper Aztec, the biggest value drivers are engine time since overhaul, maintenance-record completeness, damage history and avionics.

What to check before buying

  • Engine time to overhaul — hours and years remaining drive price more than total airframe time.
  • Logbook completeness — continuous, gap-free maintenance records protect value.
  • Damage history — any prior accident or incident; cross-check the registration against accident databases.
  • Avionics — a modern glass panel vs legacy steam gauges materially changes price.
  • Pre-buy inspection — always commission an independent inspection by a type-experienced mechanic before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Piper Aztec

How much does a used Piper Aztec cost?
Values depend on variant, engine time and whether it is turbocharged. See the live price range and median above for current Aztec listings.
What is the Aztec good at?
Carrying load. With two 250-hp engines and a strong useful load, it hauls people and cargo well, which made it a charter and utility favourite.
How many Aztec variants are there?
The line ran from the original Aztec through models A to F, with turbocharged versions offered for better high-altitude and hot-and-high performance.
How is the Aztec different from the Apache?
Both are PA-23s, but the Aztec is the heavier, more powerful 250-hp development of the lighter 150–160-hp Apache, with more speed and payload.
