About the Piper Colt

The Piper Colt (PA-22-108) is a simplified two-seat trainer version of the Tri-Pacer, built from 1961 to 1964. Stripped of the rear seats and flaps and powered by a 108 hp Lycoming, the Colt was Piper's low-cost answer for flight schools competing with the Cessna 150. Its short-wing, steel-tube construction and forgiving nosewheel handling make it an affordable, easy-to-maintain classic two-seater today.

Key price factors: engine time to overhaul, year and airframe hours, avionics, damage history and logbook completeness — see the buying guide below for the full pre-purchase checklist.

Buying a Used Piper Colt

When buying a Piper Colt, the biggest value drivers are engine time since overhaul, maintenance-record completeness, damage history and avionics.

What to check before buying

  • Engine time to overhaul — hours and years remaining drive price more than total airframe time.
  • Logbook completeness — continuous, gap-free maintenance records protect value.
  • Damage history — any prior accident or incident; cross-check the registration against accident databases.
  • Avionics — a modern glass panel vs legacy steam gauges materially changes price.
  • Pre-buy inspection — always commission an independent inspection by a type-experienced mechanic before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Piper Colt

How much does a used Piper Colt cost?
The Colt is among the most affordable certified two-seaters available. See the live price range and median above; fabric and tube condition, engine time and avionics drive most of the price difference.
What is the difference between the Colt and the Tri-Pacer?
The Colt (PA-22-108) is the two-seat, no-flaps trainer derived from the four-seat Tri-Pacer (PA-22). They share the short-wing airframe and nosewheel layout, but the Colt is lighter, simpler and cheaper, aimed at training rather than family flying.
