Designed by legendary engineer Fred Weick for the Engineering and Research Corporation (ERCO), it was intentionally engineered to be stall-proof, spin-proof, and accessible to low-time pilots. The year 1946 marked the height of its commercial production, with 4,309 units built that year alone following the pause of World War II. Two-Control System: The iconic factory design eliminates rudder pedals entirely. The control wheel is interconnected with both the ailerons and rudders, allowing the pilot to steer the aircraft in the air and on the ground much like a car. Tricycle Landing Gear: It was one of the first light civilian aircraft to sport a trailing-link tricycle gear setup rather than a conventional tailwheel, significantly reducing the risk of ground loops. Open-Cockpit Flight: The sliding canopy layout allows pilots to drop the side windows while in flight for a true open-air VFR flying experience. Wing Architecture: Originally manufactured with fabric-covered aluminum wings, many surviving 415-C models including N87336 have undergone STC metal-wing conversions to eliminate fabric maintenance. Performance Specifications Engine: Continental C-85 horsepower (C-75 Engine Conversion). Cruising Speed: 90 mph to 100 mph Fuel Consumption: Very economical, burning only about 5.3 gallons per hour of 100LL. Landing Gear: Tricycle gear, making it highly forgiving on crosswinds and landings. Useful Load: Seats two occupants comfortably, with typical gross weight 1,400 lbs (Not an LSA but qualifies under new Mosaic rules).
