About the Bombardier Global 5000

The Bombardier Global 5000 (and the re-engined Global 5500) is the shorter-fuselage Global — large-cabin comfort with ~5,200 nm range (5000) or ~5,900 nm (5500 with Pearl 15 engines). A step below the 6000 in cabin length but with the same Global DNA and many of the same systems. For buyers who don't need 6,000+ nm range, the 5000/5500 offers Global-class cabin at lower acquisition and operating cost.

Buying a Used Bombardier Global 5000

Buying a Bombardier Global 5000 is about the engines, maintenance programs and avionics as much as the airframe. Engine and airframe hourly-maintenance programs transfer with the aircraft and materially change both price and risk.

What to check before buying

  • Engine status & program — time to overhaul/MPI and whether the engines are enrolled on an hourly maintenance program (the biggest value driver on any jet).
  • Airframe program & inspections — scheduled (Doc) inspections, airframe/parts programs and total cycles.
  • Avionics & mandates — a modern glass flight deck plus required mandates (ADS-B, FANS) raise value and capability.
  • Damage history & logbooks — complete, gap-free records and a clean accident history protect resale.
  • Pre-buy inspection — a full pre-buy at a type-authorised service centre before money changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bombardier Global 5000

What are the biggest maintenance cost drivers on the Bombardier Global 5000?
The 8C heavy maintenance check can exceed $1M. Annual maintenance runs $400-500K, with another $200-300K possible for unscheduled repairs. The roll-control input module (RCIM) has been subject to an AD after a 2019 German Air Force incident where incorrect installation reversed roll commands — verify compliance on any pre-owned aircraft.
How does the Global 5000 compare to the Gulfstream G550?
Both offer ultra-long-range capability (5,200 nm vs. 6,750 nm for the G550). The Global 5000 has a wider cabin cross-section (8.2 ft vs. 7.3 ft) and lower acquisition cost on the used market. The G550 wins on range and resale value. Operating costs are comparable at $3-4M annually.
Is the Global 5000 a good investment for charter operators?
Fleet-for-sale percentages have stayed below 10% since 2015, indicating strong demand. The wide cabin and flat floor make it popular with charter clients. However, high annual fixed costs mean utilization needs to exceed 400 hrs/yr for charter economics to work.
